The Villain
1. Vindictive
He imperils the happiness of Venetian businessmen
Antonio: I oft deliver'd from his forfeitures Many that have at times made moan to me
2. Selfish
He curbs the will of his daughter and appears to have complete disregard of her
Shylock: I would have my daughter dead at my foot, and the jewels in her ear! Would she were hearsed at my foot, and the ducats in her coffin!
3. Cruel and bloodthirsty
He shows mercilessness and bloodlust towards Antonio in spite of his pleas for mercy.
Shylock: If I can catch him upon the hip, I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him.
Murder is not justifiable. He may have his reasons for villany, but in the end, one cannot justify murder as revenge. There can be no valid excuse for taking another person's life.
The Victim
1. Moulded by circumstances
Shylock's attitude is the result of unfortunate circumstances; He is shunned by Christians in an anti-Semitic world
Shylock: You call me misbeliever, cut-throoat dog, And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine
2 Unfairly treated
The 'mercy' rendered unto Shylock is not truly magnanimous. Chirstian mercy seems to be cruelty under a guise.
3. Forced to bear great suffering
Loses a daughter, wealth and property to a Chirstian.
Thus, it is not right to sayb that Shylock was a villian that got his just desserts. Maybe he was just a victim of his villainy.

Speeches- Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs has a near-mythical reputation in the presentation world as someone who has regularly wowed audiences over the years with his new product announcements at Macworld. But just how good a public speaker is he really? After watching his presentation, I then realise how these claims came about.
He is very straight to the point, does not beat about the bush but he is not blunt. He manages to convey his experience and emotions in a way that evokes the feeling of the listener. We are put in his shoes when he speaks of the time he was fired by Apple, how he felt so shattered but did not give up. This "aura" inspires people which i feel is really amazing.
He also uses literary devices such as imagery and repetition to emphasize his point about not giving up. Phrases like "Stay hungry" and "Dont settle for" are used to tell the listeners to make use of what time they had left and do something meaningful. Faced obstacles with determination and always better yourself.
Steve Jobs is an amazing and inspirational speaker. We can learn alot by just listening to him.

Essay: Which has been more severely affected by the haze in Singapore: our well-being or economic activities?
Our well-being has been severely affected by the haze in Singapore. The haze results in numerous health problems. Haze has caused air quality in Singapore to rise above 101 PSI; worse cases might up it up till 201. NEA says that when the air quality is in the unhealthy range, those with underlying conditions such as chronic heart, asthma or lung ailments may experience a mild aggravation of their symptoms. Those without underlying conditions may also experience eye irritation, sneezing or coughing. Thus, this shows how detrimental haze is to our health as it has the ability to affect of body systems, especially respiratory system. Therefore, our well-being has been more severely affected by the haze in Singapore.
Our economic activities have been severely affected by the haze. The haze affects tourism in Singapore. With the PSI rising to unhealthy range, foreigners are afraid of getting infected with respiratory problems such as lung infection and asthma. Moreover if the haze is really bad, flights are also cut off due to reduced visibility as depicted during the Iceland volcanic eruption. As Singapore depends quite a bit on the tourism industry, this means lower revenue for the local economy if there are a decreasing number of tourists. Thus, our economic activities have been severely affected by the haze.
Our economic activities have been severely affected by the haze. The haze affects work in Singapore. As haze is detrimental to our health, the government has to cancel many outdoor activities such as work and school. This results in a heavy loss of man hours which puts economic activities to a standstill which is detrimental to our economy. Thus, our economic activities have been severely affected by the haze.
I believe that our well-being is the more important factor and was the more severely affected. Health of the people ultimately is the most important factor when ruling a country. Without good health, people are not effective at work which affects the economy. Moreover, loss of man hours and drop in the tourism industry are short-term problems that can be solved compared to health problems which had the possibility of resulting in death. Thus, I believe, that our well-being is the more important factor and was the more severely affected.

Will humans ever have wings?
Even in Ancient Greek times, we have speculated or dreamed about having wings. The pupular tale of Daedalus and Icarus.
Daedalus was an ingenious inventor. He was expelled from Athens for killing his nephew for surpassing his inventive genius. He ended up in Crete where he served King Minos and Queen Pasiphae.
The queen requested that he build a fake cow that she could hide in so she could mate with a beautiful bull given to her husband by Poseidon god of the sea. The union of the bull and Pasiphae produced the Minotaur, a creature with a man’s body and a bull’s hea. Theseus the hero of Athens later encountered the Minotaur and killed it.
King Minos had Daedalus build a labyrinth. A labyrinth is a large complicated maze which is nearly impossible to escape. After the king discovered the cow Daedalus made for his wife. He punished Daedalus and his son Icarus by locking them up in the Labyrinth. To escape, Daedalus used his inventive skills to create wings held together with wax for he and his son. The two were able to get airborne and fly out of their maze prison. Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too high or to low by the sea. Icarus soared so near the sun that the wings melted. The boy plunged to his death into the sea south of Samos. The sea was then called the Icarian Sea.
Despite the fact that it is now genetically or physically impossible, I believe many centuries later with our ever-advancing technology, people could be immplemented with wings. Moreover, we are not sure what humans so far in the future might adapt to look like. Thus, there is a possiblilty that humans miight have wings.

Should the atomic bombs have been dropped?
Yes, I feel that the two atomic bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man should have been dropped in Japan.
Why? These bombs effectively put Japan out of the war and turn the tables on the Axis powers. Some people might say that it killed a lot of innocent lives. In both Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively, there were about 166 000 and 80 000 deaths. However, I would like to point out that the US had intensely fire-bombed 67 Japanese cities, but they syill did not surrender. It was the last resorty that the US had to use the atomic bombs. Moreover, over 6.2 million Jews were being massacred by Hitler; arent these innocent lives too? The US took this decision because it was the last resort and it was too save millions of lives more.
Also, one may think that the US chose to bomb the most populated areas only to kill many innocent civilians, but this is ridiculous to anyone who has studied history. The two cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen because they were industrialized and military ports. They could have bombed the capital Tokyo where millions of lives would be lost, but they chose millitary and industrialised ports so as to put the Japanese down as they would be left without resources.
In a nutshell, the atomic bomb shoould had been dropped as it was the way to save lives and stop the war.

Is is the real reason behind Singapores declining birthrate?
http://www.kindness.sg/articles/money-talks-when-s%E2%80%99pore-women-say-%E2%80%98i-love-you%E2%80%99
Is it the real reason behind Singapore's baby woes? New research by Singapore Management University (SMU) psychology professor Norman Li could shed some light on Singapore’s ever-shrinking birth rate. His study, published earlier this year, shows that Singaporean women are “significantly” more materialistic than their American peers.
When it comes to looking for a potential spouse, the top criterion for Singaporean women is a man’s social status. Next on the list is kindness, followed by a lively personality. In contrast, American women value kindness the most, followed by looks, then a man’s social standing.
I believe that Singaporeans are not materialistic, instead they are sensible in a way. As mentioned, in this rat-race society where social status means ALMOST everything, why wouldnt they want to climb the social ladder. Moreover, I feel it is very unfair to compare Singapore with America. Considering how much land and resources they have compared to us, Americans find it easy to buy a house compared to Singaporeans as well as they find it easier to find jobs with America standing as a global powerhouse. Thus, Singaporean women tend to go for men with higher social status in order to "survive"in this society. I find that perfectly fine and i dont believe it has any worth blowing things up like some people on the internet do.

GRC. The Double-Edged Sword
A roar of anguish and outrage surged amongst the Singaporeans, especially netizens when the Generel Election Results came out-it turns out that Minister George Yeo was defeated by the Workers' Party in Aljunied GRC. And on Tuesday, Minister Yeo announced his decision to leave politics, saying it was time for "someone younger" to take over. Netizens blamed the GRC system for taking George Yeo out of the government, claiming that losing George Yeo would be a big setback to Singapore. Local blogger, Benjamin Lee, also known as Mr Miyagi, said Minister Yeo was a "casualty of the GRC system". He said, "He (Minister Yeo) didn't leave politics. I think politics left him. Sadly, he'll be missed by the Foreign Ministry because he's demonstrated himself to be a really good ambassador for Singapore."
I personally feel that the GRC system was set up to improve chances for PAP, the ruling party, to win. But after this backfire, the government should really think twice. Popular Singapore blogger, Lee Kin Mun, also known as mrbrown, told Yahoo! Singapore that "the GRC system lets the ruling party win big but now we know they can also lose big".
I feel a sense of pain for Minister George Yeo. He has contributed a lot to Singapore, was a Minister that listened to the people and served the country with the best of his ability. Falling victim to the double-edged sword of the GRC is certainally saddening

Descriptive essay
“GRENADE! GET DOWN!” I dived down and hugged the shrapnel-ridden floor for dear life. I ignored the sudden searing pain in my right arm and the gunpowder-tasting soil in my mouth and hoped with whatever hope I had left that the frag did not roll near me. “BOOM” the thundering and unnervingly familiar explosion from 15 arm’s length away from me shook the ground from where I lay. Soil and earth sprayed in all directions. A soldier that the grenade hit was flung metres from where he lay. Getting up, I rushed to where he lay deathly still. Poor kid, no more than 24. His face was one I will never forget. His face was bloody and cracked with wounds; his glazed eyes stared over my shoulder, nothing but shock in it. He was dead. Suddenly, I shot ringed past my ear. Jostled to my senses, I could only tear my eyes away from him and charged towards the enemy….

Letters of hope
Dear Kumiko,
How are you? News of the earthquake in Japan are spilling all over the television and newspaper and I could not help but worry for your safety. I came across your article on the internet while searching for more news on the quake and how relieved i was to hear that you are okay. Japan was hit quite bad by these disasters and i just wanted to tell you despite all these circumstances, you must stand firm and move on.
Here in Singapore, we are most privileged to have no natural disasters. We complain about the smallest of floods that inches into our shopping malls, we complain about the smallest and most insignificant of thing that can easily be solved. After this quake set me thinking: We have indeed became to complacent, we take things for granted. On the televisions, the Tsunamis engulfed villages and plantations in seconds, tearing off buildings from where they stood. But WE, we complain about minor floods just because they wet our stuff and our feet.
The rest of the world prays for Japan. Japan, you must pull through. We have seen the horrors that these disasters leave in their wake but I, and milions of other people around the world, are trying their best to help Japan in whatever way we can. Do not lose hope for Matthew Henry once said, "After the storm, comes the calm". Believe it.
You must never forget that your friends are always there to support you. If at any poit of time you need help, my door is always open. Oh and radioactive clouds are heading for Tokyo, try to stay indoors! I look forward to seeing you again, my friend,
Best wishes,
Joshua Kuek

Anger Management
Anger management. Something many people do not have, I am not an exception. I have a serious anger management problem. Every time i am mad, i succumb to my instinct to fight, when someone makes me snap, i go in a raging frenzy which is something i am trying to overcome. A counsellor once reccommended to me this approach
Direct This would include making behavior visible and making communication clear. The end result is to not become resentful, but rather, be honest about the feeling of anger and what is causing it.
Honorable This includes identifying the moral basis for the anger, and being willing to dialog around the reason for the anger. In short, this includes taking responsibility for actions.
Focused This means staying with the issue of concern, and not bringing up irrelevant material.
Courageous This implies careful and thoughtful self-examination. Additionally, this means being willing to admit when one is wrong or when a reaction is inappropriate.
Humility This means seeking the truth instead of merely being defensive, and self-justifying.
Forgiveness This means acknowledging the wrong in someone else's behavior or words and then letting go of bitterness and resentment associated with that wrong.
Listen This means hearing the other person out, asking questions around their feelings and their reasons for their action.
Thankfulness This means finding elements related to the situation where one is genuinely appreciative and expressing that.
This is something i want to share with everyone, not just people with anger management problems.

Walt Disney
Everyone of all ages would have heard of Walt Disney, the man that founded the famous Walt Disney Company. The Lion King, Tarzan and Snow white and the Seven Dwarves were some of the many movies Disney had up their sleeves. Fan of all ages know the lovable characters that always brought laughs to everyone. It was back when disney songs were actually listenable to! And the movies were something you could actually watch on repeat all day long. I grew up in the 90's and everytime I listen to the disney songs from around then, it gives me peace at heart. But is Disney movies as good now as it was before? Do Disney still create great movies like it used to? YES! Maybe some mindless shows like Hannah Montana but still, once a great movie maker, always a great movie maker. There has been much talk about Disney's declining movie making skills, how Disney is too money-orientated to create good movies. But take The Princess and the Frog, a recent movie, they shocked everyone with the first black princess in Disney's history. Why? Because Disney had the virtue to put racism behind them and move on. This is the classic Walt Disney Company
Where is the love?
What's wrong with the world mama?
People living like aint got no mamas
I think the whole worlds addicted to the drama
Only attracted to the things that bring you trauma
Overseas yeah we tryin to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin
In the USA the big CIA the Bloodz and the Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And if you hatin you're bound to get irate
Yeah madness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
You gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love y'all
People killing people dying
Children hurtin you hear them crying
Can you practice what you preach
Would you turn the other cheek?
Father Father Father help us
Send some guidance from above
Cause people got me got me questioning
Where is the love?(where is the lovex3)(the love2x)
It just ain't the same all ways have changed
New days are strange is the world the insane?
If love and peace so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations dropping bombs
Chemical gases filling lungs of little ones
With ongoing suffering
As the youth die young
So ask yourself is the loving really strong?
So I can ask myself really what is going wrong
With this world that we living in
People keep on giving in
Makin wrong decisions
Only visions of them livin and
Not respecting each other
Deny thy brother
The wars' going on but the reasons' undercover
The truth is kept secret
Swept under the rug
If you never know truth
Then you never know love
Where's the love y'all?(I don't know)
Where's the truth y'all?(I don't know)

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm getting older y'all people get colder
Most of us only care about money makin
Selfishness got us followin the wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting their young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what the see in the cinema
Whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love, we're spreading anomosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feeling under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feeling down
It's no wonder why sometimes I'm feeling under
I gotta keep my faith alive, until love is found

If one takes note of the lyrics, it a very sad song. It addresses the evil in man's heart, like how terrorism is everywhere and how people kill ruthlessly. It makes me recall an article in which US soldiers in an apache helicopter just gunned down innocent civilians while laughing. The worst part is while laughing. Have humans lost what made us human? Where is the love we are supposed to have? Is it dying as the years goes by? Maybe the time of Armageddon is coming.

Music and its impact
Music can be define as a form of art whose medium is sound, music does have different genre like Pop, Rock, Alternative, R&B, Hip-Hop and so much more which anyone can have their own desired of music that they would love to listen each and everyday would pass by. music also is a way where anyone could express with what is in on their mind and it is in a good way so that there would be no violence could happen and at somehow at a point peace is at everywhere, there are so much numbered of music artist from both local and international made thier expressing in music which is they express how do they care about the society or sometimes they made music to change everyone for a better situation, but what music is all about and that is to entertain and bring happiness to each and every person's life because listening to music does make a person happy and what music all about is enjoying on it. music makes a hit to a lot of people in the world and i think no one can live without music on their life sometimes music so broad because not just by expressing but also it interprets one of a persons life. (definition by http://www.articlesbase.com/music-articles/music-makes-a-great-impact-to-life-1071093.html)
I believe music influences a person's life. I have seen people that listen to too much of a rock music causing them to be more violent and harmful, and i know its because of what they heard in the music. I believe many of us heard about the Mozart effect .A set of research results that indicate that listening to Mozart's music may induce a short-term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as "spatial-temporal reasoning". It also tells a lot about a person. People who tend to listen to heavy metal are emotional and have a tendency to sprout profanities at moments of anger. Listening to calm music naturally helps a person keep calm. Besides impacting humans, music impacts plants too. Classical music, for that matter has had a prominent effect on plant growth. The Ragas (a formation with a group of notations) in Indian classical music, are believed to have worked wonders for plant growth. In addition to that, the occident has also been a witness to experiments on how does music affect plants. The vibrations of the music created are responsible for plant growth. Music rocks our life!
I believe music influences a person's life. I have seen people that listen to too much of a rock music causing them to be more violent and harmful, and i know its because of what they heard in the music. Corruption in doctors
There has been much controversy about corruption in the medical industry. Recently, the news broke to the whole of Singapore a shocking controversy. Acclaimed surgeon Susan Lim, the first surgeon in Asia to perform a liver transplant, overcharged her Bruneian patient. The overcharge was not just a few cents but tens of millions!http://health.asiaone.com/Health/News/Story/A1Story20110225-265241.html
I decided to talk about this topic as it has always been my childhood dream of being a doctor. I believe we have all seen many cases of doctors, lawyers and businessman succumbing to their greed for money. Perhaps that is the main reason why people want to take up these lucrative jobs. Could not they see the maning of their job? Doctor have the ability to save people! To be many a patients hero! Thats why i aspired to be a doctor. But these sic cases of doctors unwilling to save someone because he or she had no money to pay really can make someone's blood boil. I believe that money is just something material, something of no value. The irony. Are you going to keep your precious money after you die? A humble sum of money that you earn TRUTHFULLY can see yourself a very satisfactory life. But saving a person's life without any superpowers, it just makes your life meaningful. Imagine saving lives everday! When you die, you will be remembered by those people you have made an impact on in your life. That is very rewarding.

Machine vs human teacher
Can the machine ever be the teacher?
Yes, one has to agree on the fact that machines mark better than teachers, especially old and tired teachers. No more, " Ms so and so, You have wrongly counted my marks by 10 marks". More trust is placed on machines compared to teachers leading to the fact that about 50% important exams are marked by machines. This is also the case in Singapore where the multiple choice questions in the PSLE are marked by machines.
However, a teacher can never be replaced by a machine. I believe that a teacher is not just someone that imparts knowledge or someone that marks our essays. A teacher is someone that you communicate with, someone you can share your feeling with and someone that will be there for you. If your school is your second home, your teachers are your elder brothers and sisters of a big family. Imagine school without a guide to prevent us from being led astray
Therefore, I believe very strongly teachers should remain as humans

Who cares for the caregivers?
I have a few comments and thoughts about this article.
1) The article stated that siblings of handicapped patients have trouble getting married because of their siblings.
How is this relevant? I feel that if someone really loves somebody, he/she is willing to share the hardship of taking care of a handicapped person, which i know first-hand is quite easy if you are willing to.
2) Why did the nursing homes turn down the request to take care of a handicapped person?
This is ironic, they are nursing homes and they are not willing to nurse someone that is in need of nursing? Then i believe there is no point in having nursing homes. What is this about applying for a nurse? A nursing home should have a basis of helping the needy not choosing who to help.
3) I disagree with the writer point of view that we cannot claim to be a civilised society if the needy among us are not taken care of, and their parents cannot die with peace of mind. I feel that we will not be a good and feeling society because we do not help the needy andare not willing to

Character traits
In All Summers in a Day, the Venus children were very cruel towards Margot, marginalising her and shoving her in a locker. When the sun finally came out after seven years, not one thought of her missing it, instead the selfish children played and played till in rained again. These children had jealousy and cruelty burning bright in their hearts. They lacked compassion, integrity (when they told their teacher all was present), respect and trust (they didnt believe Margot when she said the Sun was coming). Margot added fuel to the fire by being irritating and boasted about the Sun to the other children. I suggest she should not boast about the Sun and maybe not be so anti-social. She should play with her peers more because when her peers made an effort to invite her to play, being anti-scial makes her look arrogant. We must attain the values of compassion, respect, the ability to adapt and have a positive outlook on life.
The journey

The scenery in the frame is a painting by the hands of God himself, the mesmerisingly coloured sky and mountains in the background compliments the green plains in the foreground with cows dotting the landscape, indeed an unfrgettable sight. "Village Mereka station!" The scenery transitted out and into smiling children. Apparently they knew at what time the train passed their homes and made it their business to stand at the tracks and wave to complete strangers; and cheer them up as they rushed on. Often whole families stood outside their homes, waving and smiling as if we were relatives. This was Malaysia.

Chinese Mothers Superior
I believe that this article shows a perfect representation of a parent who does not look in her childrens' perspective. This article is so unbelievable that I question the integrity of this article. Never gone on a sleepover? Never watched TV? I can assure you that I have never seen anyone who did not watch TV or play computer games before. What do i mean by not looking in her childrens' perspective? I will not want my mom to be like an Army General. Children need some time off and some time for fun. I believe because they could not go for sleepovers, do not play games, her children will have problem socialising. There is a thing called 'snapping under stress'. She claims her shouting motivated her daughter to accomplish her piano piece. Oh yes, Army generals can motivated soldiers to die in battle. Overstress causes many hidden mental illnesses. I feel that although parents want their children to succeed, it is worth to sacrifice their children's happiness? Parents must understand their children, spend time with them, gradually the children will draw closer to the parents and they will be willing to share their shortcoming and troubles which the parents can solve WITHOUT shouting.

China's Stealth Bomber
http://http://www.toondoo.com/privateView.toon?param=wV3vkIgECMPRNutmdkM9mZQPKXzfi/PvjAjE/vxkGHgHTm7Q4eul1Q%3D%3D
I chose the background of a scene at night because Stealth Bombers do their surveillance and attacks at night. In the comic, they are depicted as shooting stars as photos of stealth bombers shows them as white streaks, resembling shooting stars. Night is a time full of wonders and horrors as I feel what could be lurking in those black skies, especially undetectable ones like the stealth bombers. So it gives a sense of impeding doom and mystery.

Mum, Singaporeans are very kind
I totally understand and sympathise with this child as someone close to me has slight autism. That person is 10 this year but still enjoys doing what little kids do. He does not have much artistic or mathematical talent but he has a lot of passion for fountains and powerpoints. After the first day i told him a bit on how to use Powerpoint, he has been practising and gradually getting better. Now he makes brilliant slides full of fountains. Back to the main point. I am very happy to see that there are still people in this world that still cares for the needy. I have seen this close person of mine shunned by his own relatives and ignored by most people. Actually, understanding a personis a very easy step, even a difficult child like an autistic child, it is just whether you will want to take that step

Ignorance a bliss?
Is it better to have never known something or to have known something but to ultimately lose it later?
I personally feel that it depends on the circumstance of the situation and the victim of the situation as well as severity of the situation. To me, I believe that the fact that you know something noone else in the world knows, could make a difference. You will become different because you have the knowledge that noone else. To quote Charles Caleb Colton, "We owe much of our knowledge not to those who have agreed, but those who differed". I sincerely belief that the person with this knowledge will use it for the benefit of the people. However, that is the more positive side. The fact is that not everyone can bear the knowledge. "Knowledge is power". To quote Spider-man uncle,"With great power comes great responsibility". Moreover, the person could be negatively affected by it or uses it for evil means. This type of situation is best left not knowing. I believe if this were to happen, the individual must learn to cope with it, unlike Margot in All in a summers day who became anti-social because she knew the sun and hated the rain. Ultimately, it boils down to the individual's character that gives the result

Subject LA
Nope I have not been under the circumstance of being someone that is left out in the group but i have seen people that were. Especially now, a crucial time to pick your group members for project competition, I believe there is one or two people that noone has chose to be in his group. You might think it is a pity, but sometimes the problem does not lie with the people but yourself. Some people are just anti-social and ignores people that want to be friends with them. I believe this snobbish behaviour is bred in that person because he feels superior to others. However I cannot deny that group members that are forced to allow him to join the group tend to ridicule him and not share information with him because they believe he is just a freeloader. My solution to them is that instead to isolating him, make him hold an important position so he will not be able to slack. In this way, he will be able to see how important group members are and the importance of friends.
